Abraham Lilienfeld Award from the American College of Epidemiology

• Finally, I am pleased to introduce the recipient of the 2018 American College of Epidemiology Abraham Lilienfeld Award, Dr. Vic Schoenbach. This is the College's most prestigious award and is given in honor of Abraham Lilienfeld, a founder of the American College of Epidemiology. Dr. Lilienfeld was a renowned teacher and scholar and served as a mentor for many an early member and fellow of the College. For more than two decades, Dr. Schoenbach has served on the faculty of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Schoenbach has not only been an outstanding academic, mentor, teacher, and colleague, but has been an outstanding leader in studies of health equity. His research and teaching interests are focused upon minority health and minority advancement; prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections; social epidemiology and social justice. He has authored numerous publications and books, including an online epidemiology textbook that is available in both English and Spanish, that has been downloaded in countries all over the world. He has been instrumental in setting a solid foundation for the Minority Affairs Committee of the College, that has since become the cornerstone of ensuring issues of equity, inclusion, disparities, and diversity are addressed in the field of epidemiology, and especially within the College. Dr. Schoenbach has been a member of the College for 35 years, of which 24 he has been a Fellow. His service to the College dates back to its early days, when he served on the Committee on Examination for entrance to the College. Dr Schoenbach's dedication to teaching, mentoring and scholarship is exemplary, and I'm sure would do Dr. Lilienfeld proud. Please recognize Dr. Schoenbach as he shares some reflections.
